Butterflies Method for Health - Book Synopsis
Butterflies Method for Health is a timely book for today’s world, bringing back ancient wisdom as basics to make modern medicine even more successful. It urges us to rediscover and embrace natural healing knowledge which is so intuitive (i.e., fix the root cause by understanding the qualities of symptoms, foods, and activities) that we wonder why it gets bypassed in today’s approach to healthcare. The book’s butterflies framework is easy to understand and follow. Over time, people will use it as their first line of defense and offense against health symptoms instead of immediately turning to over-the-counter pills and prescription drugs. The Butterflies Method is time-tested, proven through extensive research (more on this below), and illustrated through the success examples illustrated on the Home page (here).
The book trains us to patiently understand and address root causes of symptoms instead of seeking superficial quick fixes. We learn the basics about the qualities of foods and activities and how they directly impact health. We learn to treat our unique symptoms (curative care). We also learn how to self-doctor each day to avoid getting new symptoms (preventive care) in ways that work earlier in the pathological process, that is, preventive care that is “truer” than current approaches. The book clarifies that we do not have to discontinue our current physician care because the Butterflies Method is compatible with modern medicine - we will always have the wonders of modern medicine to turn to for supplementation or in advanced stages of health deterioration.
Curative Care (Symptoms Treatment)
The Butterflies Method teaches that manifested symptoms can be traced to root causes. We learn that subsets of symptoms have a common thread. The Symptoms Butterfly (presented along with other Butterflies on the back cover of the book, reproduced on this page) is a succinct representation of how the Butterflies Method simplifies the way in which we can view symptoms and their interconnectedness. We may feel relieved when we learn that some of our symptoms that seemed to have popped up randomly are in fact related. We learn the Intuitive Treatment Principle and are able to draft each day’s treatment plan for ourselves within seconds – this treatment plan is based on humble foods and activities.
Accordingly, we are next introduced to the Foods Butterfly - it lists foods in a format that enables us to quickly understand our ideal food choices for the day, or until our symptoms reduce and give us relief. This foods-as-medicine approach is far more individualized than generic “this ingredient is good” and “this ingredient is bad”. It will help us come up with recommendations for ourselves at each moment of the day along the lines of “this ingredient is good for me now at 4 p.m.” and “this ingredient is bad for me (but is good for my wife) now at 9 p.m.”. It is personalized foods as medicine by the hour.
Likewise, the Activities Butterfly lists activities (like daily practices, hobbies, exercise, etc.) in a format that helps us to quickly identify appropriate activities for our day to help mitigate our symptoms and feel our best.
Truer Preventive Care (Symptoms Preemption)
The Butterflies Method not only helps us to alleviate symptoms that we are already suffering from, it also helps us prevent the onset of new symptoms. We learn eight basic tools to guide us on how to implement personalized preventive care. One of those tools is the Diagnostics Butterfly, which helps us learn how to interpret the appearance of our tongue and stools each day to decide how to prevent the onset of new symptoms.
Understanding Ourselves
The Butterflies Method also helps us understand our personal constitution, that is, the make-up of our body and mind. The Personal Butterflies are very succinct representations of the incredibly complex human that any individual is. However, such a simplified representation provides a powerful tool in caring for ourselves. We may also find that understanding this Personal Butterflies framework will ease some of our relationships, help us find our life’s purpose, and live vibrantly in bliss.
And More
After addressing the above basics in detail, the book next covers additional topics that pertain to specific symptoms and advanced interventions (the tree image on this page conveys the broad scope of the Butterflies Method). Appendix H of the book also briefly describes macro-level initiatives that individuals and organizations can undertake to help build a future that promotes countrywide adoption of such self-empowered daily diagnostics, prevention and treatment.
The book cautions that, as expected with all modes of natural healing which address root causes, results can take time. We are accordingly invited to embark on our gentle journey back to optimal health with sufficient patience and perseverance.
Note: While the Butterflies Method’s framework is new and efficient, none of the underlying concepts are new - they are time-tested and have existed for millennia as the science of Ayurveda*. What the book newly and very successfully accomplishes is that it presents the concepts in a language, format, and sequence that is easier for the modern world to understand.
*Ayurveda
The Butterflies Method is primarily rooted in Ayurveda, the system of healthcare that originated in India millennia ago from the same traditions that gifted us yoga, and is regarded as the mother of all health sciences. Ayurveda comprises a large body of knowledge about physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Its clinical effectiveness is chronicled in thousands of research papers that have been published in various peer-reviewed journals (some included in the list below). The Butterflies Method for Health is a starter book that provides a doorway into the vast world of Ayurveda by introducing concepts in a particular sequence, reducing multi-dimensional theories into a simplified framework for the beginner, and fitting otherwise-voluminous information into concise ranked formats (butterfly shapes).
